Noynoy Aquino Platform
Before deciding who to vote, I try to check the candidate’s platform first. I checked out Noynoy Aquino’s platform before. Quite honestly, I am far from impressed. The Noynoy’s platform looks like it can be created by a high school student who needs to pass it the next day as an assignment.
The platform revolves around fighting corruption. I love the idea and I believe who can eliminate corruption in this country should be voted and praised. However, I too can say that I want to reduce corruption to zero. Heck, I want world peace too. But I have no idea how. The main turn off to me was his official’s site inability to say how to do it exactly. I like that he dislikes corruption but he has to tell me how to do it. Otherwise, it is just another man dreaming about something unachievable.
Recently, his site made an update, which I like. It included the action steps he going to take should he win the presidency. The action steps however, STILL cannot say how he can fight corruption in this country. I read it nonetheless and here are some things that I am not a fan of.
1. 12 Year Basic Education Cycle
People who can afford it will add 2 more years in their education. If I am not mistaken, this is like studying up to Grade 8 instead of Grade 6 before going to high school for four years. Noynoy, what were you thinking?!? First, not a lot of people can afford education but still work their butts off to get their children to school. Additional 2 years will be a pain for the parents. You cannot just say, if you can’t afford it, do not do it. Of course, some organizations will see lack of two years as lack of education. I believe the intention behind it is to make students learn more so they can get better jobs or get to better universities. But is that really the problem? I know people who went to Grade 7 but say there isn’t anything special about it. That it is a waste of time. Can’t we just focus on increasing the quality of education instead of adding more years?
2. Medium of Instruction Rationalized
He wants our schools to teach in the mother tongue (Filipino or perhaps the dialect) from pre-school to grade 3 and start using English as medium of instruction on Grade 4. The reason for this is that children tend to understand the lesson better when it is taught in the mother tongue. A lot of kids that I know of know how to speak English better. What happens to them? How exactly do you teach Math subjects in Filipino or in the dialect? I can’t imagine how.
